When I was in the thick of cloth diapering, my friend Mo gave me some reusable cloth wipes. I wasn’t too into them at first. I would use disposable wipes, and oftentimes, they went through the wash with the cloth diapers (disposal wipes are pretty strong). Then I ended up using the reusable wipes since I was washing wipes anyway:). So if you are a new mom and using cloth diapers, I HIGHLY recommend using reusable cloth wipes!
I first started making my own solution for the cloth wipes and then just went to using straight water because, to me, it was more of a hassle, although the solution worked well. My husband and I agree that the cloth wipes are great and just the perfect size.
A few years later, after I learned sewing basics, I thought it would be fun to make the cloth wipes as presents for new mommies. You know those little towels you might get during registration for a fun run or something? Those thin little towels are the perfect towel to repurpose into a reusable cloth baby wipe or a fun washcloth because with 2 layers, they don’t create a lot of bulk. I have also used thicker towels, too, and they work, but they are just thicker. I guess it depends on your likeness as to what thickness of a towel to use.
This project is SOOO easy, and it is fast to make. These would be a great little starter project for the new-to-sewing crowd.
UPCYCLED & REPURPOSED CLOTH WIPES & WASHCLOTH TUTORIAL
What you’ll need:
- 6” square of washed flannel (or whatever size square or rectangle you want especially if you are using scraps!)
- equal size of a terrycloth, washcloth or towel (I used towels I get at running events that I hadn’t put to use)
- matching thread
- scissors
- sewing machine
The Instructions:
Cut out a piece of washed flannel 6''x6'' (or whatever size you want). Cut out a matching piece of terry cloth fabric
Pin right sides together.
Start 1'' away from one corner, and sew 1/4'' almost all the way around the square, leaving about 2'' to flip the material.
Turn the fabric right sides out.
Sew 1/4'' around the square.
Now you have a finished project
